The effect of biofreeze on delayed onset muscle soreness induced changes to running biomechancis

Abstract Summary
The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of a menthol-based topical analgesic on delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) induced changes to running biomechanics and pain. We measured perceived pain utilizing a comparative pain scale (CPS), and pain pressure threshold (PPT). Kinematics were measured with a 3D motion capture system. Biofreeze® led to a decrease in perceived pain and increased pressure threshold compared to the placebo group. The group that received Biofreeze® also showed greater trends towards a return to normal gait kinematics. This suggests Biofreeze® could be an effective option to mitigate the effect of mild DOMS on running biomechanics, reducing pain and restoring normal gait mechanics to avoid injury caused by compensatory changes to gait.
