A comparison of different technologies and metrics to measure postural stability during the clinical test of sensory interaction and balance

Abstract Summary
We compared different devices (Force Plate {FP}, Inertial Measurement Units {IMU}, Pen-tail {Pen}) across related metrics of postural sway for the Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction and Balance (CTSIB).We found that Area of Ellipse Bounded (AoE B) and AoE eigenvalue (AoE E) were the most sensitive metrics at detecting differences in postural sway. When device outputs were converted to velocity, we found the sensitivity of FP and IMU similar, therefore, we conclude that IMU is effective at measuring CTSIB balance performance.
