A preliminary study on the influence of footwear outsole coefficient of friction and forefoot bending stiffness in futsal functional test

Abstract Summary
In this study, we aimed to clarify futsal shoe outsoles mechanical properties and demonstrate its effect on resultant performances of a v-cut manoeuvre functional test. One participant performed multiple trials of a pylon course using three shoes, each with different outsole’s dynamic coefficient of friction and forefoot bending stiffness values. All trials were performed on non-abrasive hard surface flooring. The shoes with higher forefoot bending stiffness and higher dynamic coefficient of friction were found to produce better results in the functional test. It was also shown that there are significantly strong positive correlations between higher traction and higher bending stiffness properties with faster time recorded in the functional test results. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that futsal shoes with higher outsole traction properties and stiffer forefoot bending design could potentially improve the resultant performance of players, especially for the movement task that consists multiple changes of direction.
