A mechanobiological model for time-dependent biochemically and biomechanically driven degradation of injured cartilage

Abstract Summary
Healthcare lacks effective tools to identify patients in danger of post-traumatic osteoarthritis progression. Knee joint inflammation and excessive shear strains due to mechanical loading post-injury have been suggested to promote the disease progression. We developed a mechanobiological algorithm to capture cartilage degeneration in a time-dependent manner via these two mechanisms. This computational approach holds promise to predict disease progression in time and to provide help in planning of clinical interventions.
