Abstract Summary
Tai Chi has demonstrated its effectiveness for improving the postural stability of older adults and high fall risk individuals. The effects of Tai Chi on the postural stability of healthy young adults, however, have yet to be investigated. The present pilot study aimed to fill this gap. The pre-/post-test measures of postural stability from 15 healthy young adult participants under eyes open (EO)/eyes closed (EC) and firm/foam surface conditions were examined. Center of pressure-based measures of mean sway velocity (MSV) and 95% elliptical area (EA) were used to assess postural stability. A three-way ANOVA was run to determine if there was a difference in postural stability following the Tai Chi intervention. Only MSV under eyes closed conditions was found to decrease following the intervention. These findings suggest that a single Tai Chi intervention has immediate effects on the postural stability of healthy young adults.
