Relation between electromyographic and metabolic variables on gait in chronic heart failure and heart transplant patients

Abstract Summary
Walk is an economic activity, as more efficient mechanical contribution, less is necessary from metabolic input. Patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) and hear transplanted (HT) present peripheral musculoskeletal disorders, dyspnea and fatigue in their activities. Objective: to verify the association between metabolic and electromyographic (EMG) parameters in CHF, HT patients and healthy controls. Methods: treadmill protocol; EMG data (14 muscles) and oxygen uptake were collected simultaneously at 5 walking speeds. Correlation and regression tests were applied between oxygen consumption (VO2) and muscle coactivation in patients and controls. Results: Strong correlation controls: 0.99; chronic heart failure: 0.92; heart transplant 0.88, indicating a linear relationship between the C and CEMG, and strong correlation between VO2 and cocontraction. Conclusion: These finding indicate a strong relation between metabolic and EMG variables. For CHF and HT patients it can help to explain some difficulties in daily activities and to assist in physical rehabilitation.
