Aging increases reaction time during lateral precision stepping to near and distant targets

Abstract Summary
We tested the effects of age and lateral target distance on reaction time during precision stepping. Compared to young adults, older adults have more missed steps and slower reaction times during reactive lateral stepping in walking. Surprisingly, these apparent deficits, which may relate to an inability to accommodate balance challenges in the real world, were unaffected by how far subjects had to step to the target.
