Abstract Summary
Mouth protectors (i.e. mouthguards) are devices that are used in many sports in an effort to protect orofacial anatomy, in particular teeth, from injury, including impact-induced injury. There is limited biomechanical literature examining the mechanics of these impact-induced injuries. This preliminary study used an in-vitro swine model with anterior incisors exposed to impact. Through regression techniques it was determined that of the measures considered, change in linear velocity of an impactor (pre-impact to post) was statistically the most reliable predictor of permanent tooth displacement.
