Palmar pressure distribution using a pneumatic sleeve orthosis during lofstrand crutch-assisted gait

Abstract Summary
A soft pneumatic sleeve orthosis worn around the forearm and connected to the cuff of a Lofstrand crutch was designed to help alleviate high loading demands on the wrist and hand during crutch-assisted gait. When pressurized, the orthosis was found to provide moderate and physiologically-acceptable constriction pressure to the forearm (< 35mmHg), support the wrist in a more neutral position and distributed body force into both the crutch handle and cuff [1]. In this abstract, the effect of this orthosis on palmar pressure distribution was investigated. Results indicated reduced palmar pressure magnitude and shifted pressure concentration location away from the carpal tunnel region to the adductor pollicis.
