Achilles tendon shear wave speed as a measure of the active modulation of standing balance

Abstract Summary
We compared posturography and Achilles tendon shear wave speed measures during quiet standing in healthy young adults. We found that wave speed closely tracks fluctuations in the center of pressure, an observation attributable to the direct relationship between wave speed and tendon loading. Both tendon wave speed and center of pressure fluctuations increased when standing with eyes closed. This sensitivity suggests that tendon wave speed measures could be used to probe the musculotendon actuation and control of balance.
