Triceps surae muscle volumes are smaller but similarly distributed in older adults compared to young adults

Abstract Summary
Older adults experience both sarcopenia and altered propulsive power generation during walking. To examine if non-uniform sarcopenia effects correspond with functional gait changes, we measured individual triceps surae muscle volumes in young and old adults. While muscle volumes were smaller in older adults, the distribution of plantarflexor muscle was the same.
