The knee and ankle extensor muscle effort during walking, running and sprinting in young versus older adults

Abstract Summary
The muscles operating closest to their functional limits produce the “weak link” for locomotor ability. This study shows that both young and old adults operate at a much greater relative effort at their ankle plantarflexor than knee extensor muscles during walking and running. This suggests that interventions designed to enhance locomotor ability should focus especially on improving plantarflexor capacity.
