Musculoskeletal modeling of the spine in children and adolescents: a validation study

Abstract Summary
Musculoskeletal spine models are entirely based on data from adults and might not be applicable for children and adolescents. We therefore created spine models for each year from 6-18 years of age by adjusting length and mass distribution as well as inertial properties, sagittal alignment and muscle cross-sectional area and validated by comparing to in vivo data. The results showed high correlations between model predictions and in vivo data, indicating the suitability of our models for the reasonably accurate prediction of maximal trunk strength, segmental loading and trunk muscle activity.
