Walking on a gaming simulator: metabolic and mechanical aspects

Abstract Summary
We studied walking on a simulator designed for gaming where the subject moves by sliding his shoes on a concave surface. The metabolic cost is (about 3-5 times) higher compared with ‘normal’ walking and walking speed is lower than on treadmill at matched stride frequency. Total mechanical work is higher than ‘normal’ walking at slow speeds and alone cannot explain this higher metabolic cost. Thus, the extra work to overcome friction could be the determinant of the increased metabolic cost of walking in a gaming simulator.
