Biomechanics of the inferior glenohumeral bands in presence of a type ii slap lesion: a fea study

Abstract Summary
Shoulder joint is subjected to a very demanding role for athletes as well as workers lifting weights above their shoulders. Type II SLAP (Superior Labral Anterior to Posterior) lesion is the most common type of SLAP. CT scan images were obtained from a patient's shoulder diagnosed with type II SLAP lesion. The 3D model was made then it was simulated using a general-purpose FE software. Then, A 60 deg external rotation test was applied to the femur and the strain distribution in the capsule was obtained. Maximum principal strain in the anterior (AB-IGHL), and the posterior band (PB-IGHL) and the axillar pouch (AP). were compared with a healthy 3D model. ANOVA showed no significant difference between both models. The results suggest that a non-surgical procedure is the best option for treating this type of lesion, as it is hypothesized by some orthopedists.
