An integrative approach to the aerodynamics of elite marathon running performance

This abstract has open access
Abstract Summary
We used Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations to calculate aerodynamic drag forces, measured the metabolic cost of overcoming small resistive forces and then translated the metabolic savings from drafting to improvements in marathon running performance. We find that every kilometer that an elite marathoner drafts behind a pacemaker saves 5 seconds.
